Founder’s Legacy
Mrs. Gloria Jean Canty-Williams
Founder of SKIP, Inc. Community Resource Services In Loving Memory — November 11, 2022
Mrs. Gloria Jean Canty-Williams was a visionary advocate whose life’s work transformed the way communities recognize and support children of incarcerated parents. Through compassion, determination, and unwavering faith in the potential of young people, she dedicated more than five decades of her life to creating resources and opportunities for children often overlooked by society.
The Beginning of a Mission
In 1976, while assisting with a research study conducted by the Hillsborough County Study Commission for Children in Tampa, Florida during the International Year of the Child, Mrs. Williams made a startling discovery. At that time, there were no organized services anywhere in the United States specifically addressing the needs of children of prisoners.
Recognizing this critical gap, she envisioned an organization that would advocate for these children and provide meaningful support. That vision became SKIP, Inc. Community Resource Services, founded in 1976 and incorporated in the state of Florida in 1980.
What began as one woman’s determination to ensure children were not forgotten grew into a powerful mission that would impact families across the nation.
Expanding the Vision
On April 9, 1997, Mrs. Williams established the SKIP, Inc. National Headquarters in Alabama, where she served faithfully as Executive Director. Her leadership helped expand the organization’s programs, outreach, and advocacy.
By 2003, SKIP chapters had been established in Georgia, Michigan, and Texas, allowing the organization to extend its services to even more children and families affected by incarceration.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Williams spent countless hours researching, developing programs, and advocating for policies that addressed the unique challenges faced by children of inmates—many of whom were living in at-risk environments.
A Legacy of Advocacy and Hope
Mrs. Williams believed that every child deserves opportunity, dignity, and support regardless of their circumstances. Her dedication helped shine a national spotlight on the needs of children of incarcerated parents and inspired others to join the mission of providing guidance, mentorship, and resources.
Her legacy lives on through the ongoing work of SKIP, Inc. Community Resource Services, the families whose lives have been touched by its programs, and the many individuals inspired by her commitment to service.
Continuing the Mission
Mrs. Gloria Jean Canty-Williams passed away on November 11, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and advocacy. She resided in the Montgomery, Alabama area with her husband, Norman Williams, and remained devoted to the mission of SKIP throughout her life.
Today, SKIP continues to carry forward her vision—ensuring that children of incarcerated parents are seen, supported, and empowered to build brighter futures.
